Our methodology
How we research, evaluate, score, and recommend baby and toddler products. Every category has a published review framework.
The basics
- Expert evaluation. Each product is assessed by a credentialed reviewer against the needs of the relevant age range, drawing on clinical and professional experience, manufacturer specifications, published safety standards, and aggregated parent feedback.
- Credentialed authors. Reviews are written or reviewed by a credentialed author (pediatric RN, IBCLC, OTR/L, CPST, or related) whose expertise matches the product category. Credentials are listed on every page.
- No paid placements. We accept no payment from manufacturers. Affiliate compensation never influences our recommendations.
- Safety standards referenced. Where a recognized standard applies, we evaluate against it, for example FMVSS 213 for car seats, CPSC crib standards, and ASTM toy and stroller standards.
- Recall awareness. We check the U.S. CPSC recall database and flag any active recall affecting a product we cover.
Scoring
Each review uses a multi-section scorecard on a 0-10 scale (typically Build Quality, Safety, Ease of Use, and Value). Scores reflect our reviewers' expert assessment based on the criteria above, product specifications, and aggregated parent feedback.
How we evaluate, by category
Car seats
Reviewed by a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST). We reference FMVSS 213, confirm NHTSA/CPSC registration, assess installation and fit guidance across common vehicle and child-size scenarios, and check for current recalls.
Cribs and sleep products
We reference CPSC crib standards (16 CFR 1219) for slat spacing and mattress fit, and assess every product against AAP Safe Sleep recommendations. We do NOT recommend any product that conflicts with AAP Safe Sleep guidelines.
Bottles and feeding
Reviewed by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). We assess flow rate, nipple shape, sterilization compatibility, and reflux considerations against clinical guidance and aggregated parent feedback.
Toys
Reviewed by a Pediatric Occupational Therapist (OTR/L). We reference 16 CFR 1500 small-parts/choking-hazard guidance, confirm the manufacturer's age range, and flag small-part and magnet risks.
Strollers and carriers
We reference ASTM F833 (strollers) and ASTM F2236 (carriers), and evaluate weight, fold mechanism, storage, and ergonomic support alongside aggregated owner feedback.
Authoritative sources we cite
- American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
- U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, for car seats)
Refresh schedule
We refresh published reviews when: (a) the product is recalled, (b) the manufacturer changes a safety-relevant component, (c) the AAP, CPSC, or FDA issues a new guideline that affects the product category, or (d) we have completed 12 additional months of use data.
